Volkswagen Superbowl XVIII Commercial

This is a cute commercial. It is called Angels and Rainbows. In it a daughter hears her dad say that every time a VW passes the 100,000 mileage mark an engineer earns his wings. Most of the commercial is spent watching wings sprout of the backs of men in white coats, with some mildly funny scenes. She asks if rainbows fly out of the engineer’s butts at 200,000 miles. Fortunately, that is when the commercial ends so we do not see that.

The obvious point is how reliance and long lasting Volkswagens are.

30 second Superbowl commercials cost about $4 million. This advertisement has some cute and funny moments, but overall it is fairly tame. We would say the commercial is not memorable enough to be remembered long.

Here is another VW commercial for the big game using a different, sexier angle:

Carmen Electra is featured in this thirty second ad. Although this ad also has a sexy moment, and immediately afterwards a funny moment to apparently detract from Carmen Electra, overall there is not much here.

Neither commercial seems destined to win best commercial for the Super Bowl and will probably not do much, if anything, for car sales.

On the other hand, the Examiner in a pre-game commercial review called Angels and Rainbows catchy and brilliant, and better than prior Volkswagen commercials. We would not go that far. On the other hand, how well a commercial stacks up for the game often depends on the strength of the competition. From what we have seen so far the competition will be tough.

What Others Have to Say

Cars dot com liked the spacious interior and the smooth and comfortable ride. They also made a point of noting the huge amount of leg room for those in the back seat.

On the downside they thought it could raise the ownership cost by the V6 engine needing premium gas, they were not sure what to make of the optional dual-clutch transmission, and felt the steering would have been tighter to the road.

Edmunds said the 2013 version was very similar with only minor changes to the prior year’s model. The car is refined, efficient, and for a family car a solid choice to buy.

The car has top safety scores, a quiet ride, V6 engine, and a refined and high quality interior. Not up to par was the braking distance.

The bottom line for Kelley Blue Book is that the car is a great value for the money. It has tough competition but the Passat is one of the best family cars. It has a lot of space, plentiful features, affordable and very comfortable.

The Passat is recommended for those wanting a relatively inexpensive car with German engineering that is made in America. The car has a lot of standard features.

On the other hand options can quickly increase the price for the type of car where there is plenty of good competition.

The interior of the car is not overdone. It is classy, tasteful and refined. Moving above the base model gets you a very nice looking wood trim and real leather. There is a surprising amount of leg room for those in the back seat.

The exterior of the car is sleek and subtle in its appearance. The horizontal lines bring attention to the long length of the car. The long size helps give the car a spacious trunk area. The trunk space is bigger than some cars officially classified as large.

Coming standard with the car is a manual transmission, cloth seating, Bluetook, and various automated controls. There are a lot of additional options to consider for the car. This includes a mobile device enabled USB port, more trims and packages such as leatherette seating if you do not want leather, a premium sound system, automatic transmission, and a strong V6 engine.

Buyer Reviews Synopsis

Five out of five stars. I have the TDI Passat. It gets excellent fuel mileage, has lots of room in the front and back, and is very comfortable when driving. – Utah.

Five out of five stars. I really love my car. It is comfortable, beautiful, and I feel like I got a lot more luxury what what I paid for compared to other cars I looked at. It is really a pleasure to drive. You can feel the road more than other cars but that is part of the German design.
Did I say I loved my car? – New Jersey.

Five out of five cars. I I have owned more than eighty cars including a half dozen Volkswagens and another diesel. Overall, the ride is quiet, I am getting 45 miles to the gallon, and overall this is a wonderful car. – Georgia

Two out of five stars. Bad car. I am in Seattle where it does not get that cold, but the doors would freeze shut. I could not get them open. There was water coming down onto the car. The dealer resealed the doors for me and that fixed the problem. Then, after it rained, the windows would fog up. Now the back window won’t always roll up. Sometimes the sensor in the window will think something is there and cause the window to automatically roll down. I am more than ready for a new car and am tired of going back to the dealer. – Washington.

Four out of five stars. I wanted good gas mileage, price, heated seats, and rear leg room. The passat has the most room in the back of any other car in its class. It looks really nice and I want to keep it that way. The car handles really well and has a great design. – Ohio.

One out of five stars. The Passat SE was my first Volkswagen. The multi-function display was not working when I when to setup the bluetooth and radio. The dealer said they would fix it but it was a real bummer. So I won’t buy another VW. – North Carolina.

Five out of five stars. The Passat has the same engine as the Audi A6 and is like driving a high performance sedan. The performance is out of this world. Great car I never want to give up. – New Mexico.

What Others Have to Say

Cars dot come gave the Golf four point eight points out of five. It liked the comfortable seating and extra inside the vehicle, in addition to premium materials being used. They also liked how the car handles, its overall performance, and the diesel option.

They did not like was the ride in the diesel version, some limited visibility in the two door model when looking back over the left hand shoulder, and they thought the steering wheel could telescope further if you need to move it.

Edmunds noted the car remains essentially the same as from the 2012 model, and there was no reason for much change. The Golf has great features, strong performance, and a unique style that makes it highly recommended.

Features they most liked were the reliability and safety of the car. The diesel option offers opportunities for extra fuel savings. Driving the vehicle is fantastic and inside it is roomy with premium construction and materials for comfort.

On the downside they felt the diesel engine was pricey.

Car and Driver notes that the Golf plays a prominent role in Volkswagen’s attempt to unseat Toyota as the number one selling car manufacturer in the world.

The Golf has increased length and width to make it more roomy compared to other hatchbacks, with an edgier design for eye appeal. The body length will be more in line with other VW models so the company can make more basic parts interchangeable between different models to help keep costs and prices down for consumers.

The new diesel engine is in part driven by European requirements and new emissions standards.

Kelley Blue Book editors gave the Golf a seven point five rating. They noted this is the last year for the current Golf version with a substantial redesign planned for 2014.

If you are looking for a hatchback that is fun to drive, then the Golf is it. The vehicle is as fun to drive as anything else on the market. If price is the most important buying decision then you may need to look elsewhere.

Driving the Golf it is noticeably quiet inside. The ride is silky smooth and you would think you were in a much more expensive vehicle. The new Turbo diesel provides both extra acceleration when needed and fuel economy overall. The design is edgy to appeal to a younger type of driver.

The exterior of the car is something you will want to keep looking nice. The design has a sharp crease along the length of the vehicle that gives it a distinctive look. It is a look that has worked for the Golf for decades.

The interior is quality throughout and is not something buyers criticize. It is both functional and comfortable with fitted bucket seats. The dash has a good information display. But if you want, upgrades are available to get more on the instrument panel and sport seats.

Equipment that comes standard in 2013 includes the valuable split folding rear seat, air conditioning, power windows, and as a design element dual exhaust tips which are polished. For upgrades the seats are heated and Bluetooth is provided along with a CD player. There are also mobile device capabilities one now expects in a vehicle.

The most important option is deciding whether to get the diesel engine. Diesel is currently being heavily promoted but time will tell about customer adoption in the US.

Buyer Reviews Synopsis

Five out of five stars. I have a turbo diesel 2013 Golf with several upgrades. It works great as a commuter vehicle. Gas mileage can exceed fifty mpg. The car is very quiet and surprisingly comfortable for longer trips. Compared to other cars I checked out the interior was much more stylish. One feature I wish it had was a back up camera. – Ohio

Five out of five stars. I got the tech package with keyless entry, sunroof and navigation. The manual transmission is smooth when shifting. There are a ton of features if you dive into the car’s details. There are even two different ways to manually shift gears. The navigation screen could be bigger.
I say buy this car unless you are waiting for the 2014 redesign. – California

Five out of five stars. I corrected a mistake I made a few years when I bought a Mazda instead of the Golf. The Mazda was OK. The Golf is exciting and love the car. It has plenty of room to hold several teenager and works great as a family car. The automatic is a lot of fun to drive and I am glad I made the switch to this car. – Florida.

Four out of five stars. I have a drop that requires a lot of driving and I put many miles on a car. Looking a five door hatchbacks we decided to go with the Golf. I wanted a safe car that is reliable with premium performance. The overall look of the car is clean and tight. The interior is modern but a little sparse and I think the electronics are just basic. But I did just purchase the base model. One interesting little feature I found fun is the alarm lock sound is the same as the beep-beep horn sound used on the original Beetle. Definitely a happy customer as the the performance, handling and ride and solid and well done. – Nevada.

What Others Have to Say

Cars dot com gives the Beetle a four point six out of five rating.  They liked the retro design and luxury interior.  If you have a convertible model the top goes up and down quickly.  They were not a fan of the overall ride and felt the braking was soft.

US News gave the car a seven point three out of ten,   The highest ranking was for safety with a nine point three and the lowest ranking was a six point five for the interior.  They thought the inside of the car was too small and cramped to be an every day vehicle.

Edmunds gave the car high marks for its style.  Like other reviewers it enjoyed the turbo diesel engine option.  They appreciated the many features in the stylish interior and felt the amount of space was larger than in competitors.  On the downside they felt the price was a little high.

Motortrend gave it three out of five stars.  Their review noted the car is loaded with tech features, is larger and roomier than prior year models, and has a cool option with a retro layout of many controls can be chosen.

Buyer Reviews Synopsis

Five out of five stars!  I have the Turbo Volkswagen, the six-speed manual version and love it.  It was wonderful styling.  The shifting is smooth as silk.  The seats are awesome and super comfy.  I have blue stripes on gray.  Gotto mention the super speakers and stereo system.  Some things to nitpick are the rear defroster needs to go faster. – New York

Five out of five stars.  I have the 2013 TDI VW Beetle Convertible.  Great handling and it is getting 45 miles per gallon.  Good handling and power.  Like the sporty feel of the manual transmission.  We use it for regular transportation around town. – North Carolina.

Five out of five stars.  My wife and I love out TDI and the diesel engine.  To push the diesel our Beetle came with more features which is great.  Nice interior, trim, and turbo performance.  The mobile media, satellite, and Bluetooth rock.  We expect to get three hundred thousand miles out of this great purchase. – Colorado.

Five out of five stars.  I have fallen in love with my turbo Beetle.  I have had other Beetles and this is the best one.  Comfy and stylish I love the color of the body and the colors in the interior.  Super price. – New Jersey.

Four out of five stars.  I have not had the car that long but would recommend it someone who was single because of its size. – New York.

Five out of five stars.  Love this car.  My Beetle Convertible Turbo is the fourth VW I’ve owned.  It is the best yet and can’t say enough about this car.  The manual transmission is smooth and fast.  The interior is luxurious.  The sound system is stunning.  Overall, a wow moment getting in.  One of my friends drove it and was surprised at how responsive it was and its get up and go and how easy the transmission was.  With the top up visibility is not always great but I have learned to adjust the side mirrors.  No complaints about this one. – Texas.

Four out of five stars.  This is my second Beetle after my first had a collision.  Since that one handled the accident well I decided to get another this year.  Very, very impressed.  Great exterior and interior colors and styling.  The keyless entry is great and the car really handles well.  The side mirrors fold up which is interesting.  The steering wheel has buttons to control the radio.  The ride is smooth and there is a lot of space inside the car.  The one drawback is the mesh sunshade which can get really hot.  I should not have added the sunroof but now will probably get it tinted to help keep the handle for the sunshade cool. – California.

Five out of five stars.  My black beetle is getting 28 city and 34 highway mph.  I had a beetle years ago and the 2013 design is much nicer.  A couple big thumbs way up. – Louisiana.

Four out of five stars.  I have the 2013 Turbo Fender Edition Beetle.  It is hard to put into words how great this car is.  Very upgraded compared to classic Beetle cars in the past.  The sound system is excellent and the car is a lot of fun to drive.  There is nothing wrong with the car, but since I have not had it a long time decided I could not give it all five stars.  But right now I am very happy with this vehicle. – Texas.

Five out of five stars.  Everyone I know loves my car and so do I.  It is a rock star!  The denim blue color is incredible.  The heritage wheels on it look great.  People are always rubbernecking when I drive by.  The car is oozing style everywhere.  VW did a great job with its design.  Except for needing to upgrade the stereo there is nothing wrong this car.  It is great and will get you a lot of attention when you drive it. – Texas.
